Department of Languages has been catering to the curricular requirement of Languages and Communication courses of all UG and PG programmes run by the School in addition to the offer of doctoral programme. Apart from various English courses, the department also offers Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam and Sanskrit for students opting for these second language courses. As a supporting department, the primary goal of the department is to improve and enhance the communicative competence of the students and work towards their employability readiness. In addition to three in house faculty members for English the department has teachers for Kannada, Malayalam, Sanskrit and Hindi attached to it. Currently the department has three doctorates with two others pursuing their doctoral programme.
An additional dimension to the department is its offer of Cultural Education and Amrita Value Programme as part of the curriculum in all its programmes, an exposure which sets us apart from others and makes education at Amrita a different experience. Education, ideally must attempt to nurture the holistic development of human beings, is the belief on which the department has embarked on the teaching of courses such as the above. It is a proven fact that education, infused with spirituality, influences all branches of learning by imparting a sense of interconnectedness and wholeness that brings about an upliftment of emotional, physical, social, aesthetic, and spiritual aspects which are more important ingredients of all round human and societal development. The department organizes workshops, seminars, and conferences on different aspects of Indian studies to facilitate scholarly exchange and provides students an exceptional educational experience which supports an integrated development of the individual.
